Unfortunately, meter tampering and theft affects all residents in the Shire, with the costs of replacement and rectification being borne by the whole community. Community assistance is appreciated when tackling such issues and we hope, with your help, to promote a ‘zero tolerance’ mindset for these acts.
“Council will not tolerate any future tampering with water meters. Those found tampering with meters will be reported to police for possible criminal prosecution. Penalties for such offences can be quite severe and result in criminal records” asserts Council’s Water Services Manager Kevin Sheridan.
Charges are expected to be laid by police against at least one Gunnedah resident in relation to recent water meter tampering offences. Council has also issued penalty notices under the Local Government Act to another resident regarding a similar offence.
Please report all cases of missing or tampered with water meters to Gunnedah Police on 6742 9099 or 131444.
